FAQs About Newborn Care

Babies are delicate humans requiring round-the-clock care from the second they enter the world and arrive home. Though babies sleep 16 hours per day on average, they're constantly alert to absorb the world around them. Welcoming a new baby is an exciting time, but it's also a little frightening. Dr. Katherine Krieg and Dr. Sharon Novy at Children's Oasis Pediatrics in Gilbert, AZ, can help you take the edge off by explaining everything you need to know about newborn care when you visit our office. A few frequently asked questions (FAQS) about newborn care are below. Give our office a call if we don't answer your questions here.

FAQs About Newborn Care

What Are the Essentials of Newborn Care?

From immediate skin-to-skin contact at birth and cutting the cord, essential newborn care includes breastfeeding support, thermal care, assessing health problems, and recognizing any danger signs should they be present.

When Should I Feed and Bathe My Baby?

Consult your pediatrician to discuss how frequently to bottle or breastfeed. Expect your baby to want to eat every two to three hours. Babies should only receive baths 1-2 times a week using soap, and the choice of when to bathe them is yours. Water only baths can be everyday!

Do I Have to Breastfeed?

Not every child decides to latch, and not every mother produces milk, and that's OK. Though doctors recommend breastfeeding, it won't harm or impact your child's mental or physical health if you're unable or decide not to proceed with breastfeeding.

Whether you're a new or experienced parent, you must understand the first month of life is the most vulnerable to illness and infection. Dr. Katherine Krieg and Dr. Sharon Novy of Children's Oasis Pediatrics in Gilbert, AZ take time to listen to your concerns and have dedicated themselves to supplying you with the information you need to encourage a lifetime of optimal health and well-being for your child.
